Project Description:

Through reading about distant cultures or possibly by travelling far and wide, you may have discovered that not all societies treat women with equality to their male counterparts. You may have learned that women in some societies are disadvantaged; they are poor, uneducated and rarely do they participate in decision-making. Many rural areas in Asia (India included) embody these characteristics. Societies in these rural areas are impoverished and women are the most dis-empowered citizens. Women carry the heaviest load.  In the rural areas of the state of Tamilnadu there is an undeniable need for volunteers to raise awareness in the community about women's rights and gender equality. There is also need of volunteers to help care for the orphans, aid microfinance groups, teach English, and participate in farming initiatives. All of these projects are specifically geared to empower women in the community.

Women’s empowerment initiatives have been fostered in India with an aim to address the problems affecting both women and the society as a whole. Working as a volunteer in India, especially in women’s empowerment program, gives you the opportunity to see first and the issues that woman endures in their day-to-day lives. You will also have the opportunity to offer your own skills and knowledge to these women which can provide a solution to the struggles that they face.

Through providing education and training activities you will be equipping the women and girls of the villages of Tamilnadu state with the tools required to uplift their standards of living. You will perform tasks such as reading though business plans, developing marketing strategies, conducting workshops, providing business guidance and support, and more. Wherever you go, you will be directly involved in the process of developing small businesses in a developing country and helping people to rise above poverty.

The programs offered endow women and girls with basic skills which can help them start and run their own businesses and find employment. These programs include English language skills, computer skills, internet, email writing, writing skills, basic accountancy and bookkeeping, CV writing, job application writing, and interviewing skills. Some of the skills that are imparted in these training sessions include a focus on health and hygiene, teaching how to use health kits, prevention and protection from domestic violence, abuses, and sexual exploitation of women and young girls, child labour and child marriage.

As a volunteer here in India facilitating a women’s empowerment program, you will not only have a chance to impart your own skills and knowledge but also cultivate the opportunity to interact with rural women. You will explore their culture to observing their language and customs; it is an eye-opening encounter that will change your world view. No matter what kind of work are you doing while you are volunteering, you will enjoy your time here delving into another culture and learning about yourself and the skills you have to offer.
