Project Description

In rural India computers are fast replacing paper systems and traditional methods for information storage and communication. Learning computer skills is becoming increasingly important to enable students’ entry to further study and employment; keeping them up to date, in touch and involved.

Teaching IT in India is suited to volunteers of all abilities. Although you require IT knowledge, you do not need any IT qualifications to join this placement and any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Depending on your IT background, you can decide to teach school children or adults.

Teach computer skills to students from primary age to adult lessons. Work with students who have little or no knowledge of computers – teaching things such as switching on the computer, using the mouse, managing different windows or word processing skills. For those students who already have some knowledge of computers – compliment their studies and teach intermediate skills such as internet, email, spread sheets, presentations, printing documents and how to connect with computer devices.

Learning computers is exciting and sometimes challenging for those who have little experience or opportunity to use them. Show students that with regular use, computers are easy and fun and not only used for work purposes but for recreation and as a self-learning tool too.

We also encourage volunteers to make use of educational computer games for the students. Students who complete their IT course will receive a certificate.

For volunteers with advanced IT knowledge, you have the option to teach progressive IT skills to students at nursing colleges, industrial technical institutes, and in various other colleges around Bangalore and rural communities. This will help students with their studies as well as provide better employment opportunities later on.

There will also be the chance for IT volunteers to help with NGO programs in rural areas. These NGOs run IT education centers and provide important computer education for children, youth, and women living in rural areas. Women require basic computer skills to manage their micro-credit programs and volunteers can make a difference in their lives.

You can join the IT project in India for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
