Volunteer with children and adults with special needs programs abroad in India

Program facts

Volunteers must apply for this program at least 1-2 months in advance so they may be given enough time for their visas to be processed. Once arriving in India, volunteers will fly into the Bangalore International Airport and may then be placed in Bangalore city, Karnataka or the rural district of Tamilnadu for their program. The length of this project is a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks, in which volunteers will assist local staff in centers for children/adults with special needs, and participate in other community work.

Kenosis offers a broad range of recreational, socialization programs for children with disabilities and employment programs for adults with disabilities. Our children’s programs are geared toward boys and girls of school age, from 0-22 years old. Our adult programs are intended for women and men of at least 18 years of age, with no upper age limit. You will find 35-40 children or adults in special needs  in the centers. Your placements depends on the locations and within our partners in Bangalore city, state of Karnataka, south part of India.

The age requirement for this program is 18-60 years of age, although, volunteers aged 17 and younger may be accepted with a letter of consent from a parent or legal guardian. Your working hours at the orphanages will start earlier as many children go to school from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. The weekends, public and state holidays are yours. Plan and enjoy your weekend trip.

Enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers are vital to Kenosist! Without people who give of themselves, their time and their talents, we simply would not be able to provide the outstanding special needs programs and services that make such a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities.

Description of Programs

Volunteers work in our programs for children and adults under the supervision of Kenosis staff. They may provide one-on-one assistance to children or adults, encouraging participation, keeping activities going, and having fun! Volunteers are also essential to staging the many events and fundraising activities that take place at our centers. And, they help keep our facilities running smoothly by performing a variety of important office tasks.

The quality and variety of choices we offer is second to none. Kenosis provides continuity of age-appropriate programs, appealing to diverse individual interests and needs -- beginning in childhood and continuing throughout an adult’s life.

Children's Programs

Kenosis after school and summer programs provides a nurturing environment for school age youth with developmental disabilities. Our well-trained and caring staffs engages participants with age appropriate activities that support social, physical, cognitive, and creative abilities.

Through center-based activities and field trips, Kenosis helps participants achieve their personal best in the following areas:

  • Basic Life Skills – preparing simple snacks, learning personal care and practicing safety in the community

  • Communication - participants work on communicating their basic wants and needs through language skills, body language, picture boards or use of technology

  • Socialization - participants increase their ability to interact with their peers, such as respecting personal space, taking turns and making new friends

  • Healthy Living - including swim instruction - participants improve and practice healthy living including learning to choose healthy snacks and portion control, and have opportunities to play outside or swim.

Children's Programs: After School Enrichment

Whatever the degree or type of their disability, every child who participates in a Kenosis after School Enrichment Program experiences a culturally-sensitive environment, where each individual is valued. With staffing ratios of no more than 1:5 – and, under special circumstances, as close as 1:1 – our well-trained, caring staff engage children with age-appropriate activities that nurture social, physical, cognitive and creative abilities.

Specific activities vary from center to center, but all fall into these four categories:

  •

  • Basic Life Skills – participants practice personal safety in the community, preparing simple snacks and personal care

We always welcome your visits, so feel free to stop by the Kenosis community center near you. Or, if you would like to discuss your child’s needs, call ahead and schedule an appointment to meet with the center director.

Adult Programs

Kenosis programs for adults with disabilities respect each person’s right of self-determination. We work to support the choices of men and women with disabilities to pursue activities and work that they find interesting, meaningful, and enriching.

As we partner with those in our special needs programs, we also partner with family members and others in each person’s circle of support – helping individuals reach their full potential throughout their lives.

Our programs for adults, as well as our accessible housing locations, are intended for women and men of at least 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit.
